ZWARt KOP - BRANDVLEI - VERNEUKPAN - VAN WYKSVLEI KENHARDT The flow of the Sak river is unique. During a flood, caused by rain in the South, it could 'split' the town of Brandvlei. When the Sak river is in flood, Farmers, like Frikkie Faul, near Kenhardt, exactly knew whether the water would reach them. His own theory: - when the bridge near Brandvlei is flooded, then the water will reach his farm, other wise not. During the flood of 2000, I learnt on 'Water Affair' in the region. The older AND wiser men, exactly could tell how, where and when the flood was supposed to reach Kenhardt. The height of the 'wall of water' coming, was some times to be taken with a pinch of salt. Expressions e.g. 'The water is now moving slowly, but beware when it's coming down hill from Jacht Drift. The Sak river at last flows in the HarT bees River, which come from the Van Wyksvlei area. Frikkie also explained Verneukpan's inflow of water in the Hart bees River. Water from the adjacent area, flows on the pan - Normally, only a few cm. of water. Frikkie do not believe, the 18" of water the pan once supposed to have. Verneukpan has a perfect 1" drop from the middle of the pan in a 5 mile circle, according to the engineer preparing the track for the Dodge Polaro. 'Pardini" attempted a Landspeed record in the 60's'. The pan is as flat as a pan !! When the wind from the East, could block the water at'Campbell's Stand" (an outcrop in the West) The changing of the wind, sweeps the water from side to side , but some water, managed to escape at the outlet near Witkalk ! Verneukpan could be very slippery with only a few cm of rain. Names e.g.'Hoek van Spruit se vloer, Rietfontein, Bosduiflaagte, Perdevlei, Geelvloer, Flaminkvlei, Holpan, Van wyksvlei Brandvlei, Verneukpan are common in the area. Dolerite Boulder outcrops and stretched out scaly land ! Dolerite boulder outcrops, exposed by erosion, lead to an interesting explanation on the origin of human and animal kind. Gen 6: 17 "I am going to bring flood waters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens....) |
